Using the body's own biofeedback system to achieve balance

muscle testingKinesiology (pronounced kin-easy-ology) is a holistic biofeedback therapy that uses information from the body itself through muscle-testing. Your muscles actually become instinctual monitors of stress and imbalance within your body and provide a way to access information about your well-being that bypasses your logical mode of knowing.

Based on a synthesis of Western and Eastern approaches, Touch for Health Kinesiology (TFHK) uses feedback from muscle-testing to identify weak muscles, energy imbalances in the meridians, blockages in the chakras, and physical or emotional stressors. Then it uses this same feedback to determine the corrections necessary to restore balance.

The most common corrections may include massage of the spinal reflex points, the neurolymphatic points, the neurovascular holding points, the acupressure points, or the origins and insertions of the muscles themselves. Likewise, corrections may come from tracing the energy pathways (meridians), food testing and healthy eating advice, or goal setting. The corrections always depends on the feedback received from the individual client's body during the session.

When receiving a TFHK energy balance, you will be fully clothed and will either stand, sit, or lie on a table while the therapist positions you and asks you to resist a slight pressure in order to measure the muscle's response. Pressure points and massage techniques are then used to reestablish balance on any muscle/meridian that is found weak.

You will find it helpful to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing in which you can move your arms and legs freely. It is also helpful to drink a glass or two of pure water within the hour preceding your session.

Gardening Tips for Avoiding the "Green-Thumb Blues"

Folks in this part of the country take their gardens seriously.

Some love watching the fledgling plants grow and blossom, and avid gardeners swell with pride as they see the colors and varieties of flowers and shrubs in their yards and vegetable patches draw admiring nods from friends and neighbors.

Others derive a sense of oneness with all life as they get their hands dirty in the soil and spend mornings and evenings watering and weeding their little piece of heaven on earth. What's more, with the price of food rising, a vegetable garden makes good economic sense even while we hope the drought won't get worse and kill the vegetables and herbs we've so carefully cultivated. It makes growers feel like they are doing their part to save the planet.

Finally, working in the garden is a great form of exercise and a wonderful way to relieve stress. Some studies indicate that 30 minutes of gardening per day can cut the risk of heart attack by two-thirds.

Still, gardeners find that they often finish their task with new aches and pains arising from muscles used differently than they were used over the winter months. These tips can help you minimize soreness and enjoy your outdoor work more.

Essential Oil of the Month: Peppermint


peppermintWith summer in full swing, the bugs are out. Insects and spiders can ruin an outing, but essential oils can be the safest solution in keeping them away from tender skin. They don't contain harmful man-made chemicals.

According to Dr. David Stewart, founder of C.A.R.E. (the Center for Aromatherapy Research and Education), essential oils have been used for millennia to repel bugs. Stewart includes a list in one of his newsletters (click here to read), including everything from ants to weevils, and peppermint is the most prominent oil on the list. It works well to repel ants, aphids, beetles, fleas, flies, lice, moths, and spiders. It is non-toxic and invigorating and should be mixed with a carrier oil for best results as peppermint can sometimes be irritating to sensitive skin.

Peppermint oil also repels mice. Simply put a few drops of undiluted peppermint essential oil on cotton balls and place them around the house, sprinkle the oil directly on some items, or make a scented spray with two teaspoons of peppermint essential oil per cup of water. The peppermint applications will remain an effective repellent for as long as the scent remains. This varies according to conditions, of course, but you should get good results in most cases if you replenish the oil every two or three weeks.

Other uses for peppermint essential oil are for headaches, stomachaches, indigestion, flatulence, sore throat, muscle pain, bruises, scabies, vertigo, and physical or mental fatigue. It makes a great breath freshener, and a drop or two in a bottle of water makes a great non-caloric pick-me-up. Be sure to use a therapeutic grade oil if you are going to ingest it.

Recipes: Peppermint Essential Oil

Mint Lip Balm
You can spend the big bucks for lipsticks and balms to plump your lips, or you can try peppermint EO, a natural way to make your lips look fuller.

Mix:
1 tsp. beeswax
2 tsp. prime-pressed cocoa butter
3 tsp. any liquid oil you like. (Jojoba mimics the natural oils of your skin, but almost any pure oil will do. Olive oil, for example, gives great results.)
5-10 drops Peppermint EO
Slowly melt ingredients in a double boiler or in 30-second spurts in microwave. Cool slightly and fill containers. You can adjust the ratio of ingredients to suit your liking.

Chief Two-Trees Infusion Oils for Sinus Congestion and Headaches
3 drops Eucalyptus EO
3 drops Peppermint EO
3 drops Tea Tree EO

Boil a cup of water and remove it from the stove. While it is still steaming, add the oils. Immediately cover the cup and head with a towel and inhale for 3 minutes. Keep your eyes closed.

You can also add 2 drops each of the above oils to a tbsp. of olive oil and use as ear drops.

Mental Pick-Me-Up & Alertness Room or Body Spray
8 oz. distilled water
15 drops Peppermint EO
5 drops Lemon EO.
Optional: Replace 3 drops of the Peppermint with 3 drops of Rosemary.

Mix in spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Don't spray into eyes. Great to use when studying and before tests.
